EXHIBIT OPENING & RECEPTION
Saturday, February 15, 2025 | 6 to 8 PM

Presented with support from Broward Cultural Division

In 2018, Art Gallery 21 presented “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend” to an enthusiastic audience of residents and visitors. Quilt art enthusiasts traveled from as far away as the Florida Keys and Port St. Lucie to experience an amazing collection of handmade quilts. Since then, the topic of quilts as art has surfaced repeatedly among our mixed media artists and enthusiasts, and Art Gallery 21 has discovered that this ‘mixed media’ art form is a really big deal.

We are honored to be a recipient of a Broward Cultural Division Program Support grant for 2025 and our project, “The Art of the Quilt,” will open to the public on Saturday, February 15 from 6 to 8 PM. The exhibit will feature the work of Gary Hancock, a Wilton Manors based quilt artist, with a body of work that is at once colorful, inspiring and utilitarian.  We are also pleased to introduce our audience to Susanne Ellman, a long-time quilter whose work is reminiscent of Gee’s Bend quilts and are, in fact, influenced by them.

Mr. Hancock’s work will be accompanied by quilts created by Gee’s Bend Quilter Stella Mae Pettway and Quilt Artist Heather Jones, on loan from a private collection. Gary will be offering a collection of small items available for purchase and many of the pieces included in the exhibit will be for sale as well.

Art Gallery 21 will offer extended hours for this exhibit from February 20 thru March 7, open 3 to 7 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
