We are super excited! This Friday, February 12th we will present the awards to the winners of the Fourth Annual Island City Juried Art Competition. Now, this is not done in a vacuum. Presenting cash prizes and ribbons is serious business, so it’s done during the whirlwind we call an “Art Social!”
The great thing about our art socials is that we offer refreshments, there’s always someone to talk to, and we showcase the work of some of south Florida’s best fine artists, so there’s lots of eye candy! We’re thrilled that this year’s juried competition brought in a diverse selection of art, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, mixed media and photographs. There’s absolutely something for everyone and we sincerely hope you’ll have a few minutes to come by and see for yourself how wonderful this show is!
A huge shout out to our jurist, Tyce Marshall! He is an award-winning artist who graciously agreed to work with our gallery curator, Robert Gross, to select the winners. He spent a lot of time looking at the individual entries, studying color, technique and subject matter to choose the best of the best, ’cause there’s not a bad piece in the bunch!
The festivities will begin at 7 PM Friday evening and we anticipate the winners will be announced between 7:30 and 8 PM. Come join the fun! You always have the option of walking one block west to Wilton Drive and grabbing dinner at one of the many fantastic eateries located in the City’s Arts & Entertainment District, so make a night of it! We’ll be so happy to see you again or to meet you for the first time!
This first month of the new year is flying by at warp speed! The 6 Hands Collaborative exhibit, “The Art of Collaborative Art,” has been a huge success! They will be hosting their Affirmative Banner Workshop tomorrow (1/23) and the three women who are the six hands are planning a closing party next Friday (1/29) beginning at 7 PM. If you haven’t yet seen this quirky and charming mixed media show, shame on you! You’ll love it! Especially the 25 little boxes! They tell some wonderful stories!
February is going to be fun filled for all of us! On Saturday, February 6 we will do the art intake for the fourth annual Island City Juried Art Exhibition! Rules & Entry Form can be found here and we’re looking forward to seeing some of our long-time artist friends and meeting some new ones! We are pleased as punch that this year’s jurist is the award-winning artist, Tyce Marshall, whose work will be featured in our spring exhibit. The awards ceremony will take place during our exhibit unveiling and art social on Friday, February 12 and prizes include cash, ribbons and a “Winner’s Show” in March! There is an added energy to the evening as everyone waits to find out who the winners are!
On the weekend of February 20-21 (Saturday & Sunday) we have planned a Color Theory Workshop with local plein air artist and teacher, Janet Onofrey. A detailed description of the workshop along with the list of supplies needed for the workshop can be found here. You can register online, too! This is a terrific workshop for new artists who are developing their technique, and it’s equally good for experienced artists. The methods for mixing paints are many and Janet’s teaching style allows for individual development for folks at all different levels in their art career.
Many thanks to all the people who support this community service project to bring more art to the Arts & Entertainment District of Wilton Manors! We couldn’t do it without YOU!
Our fall exhibit closed last Friday night and the gallery is dark until January. We anticipate some painting and sprucing up will be going on during December so we’ll look really spiffy when 6 Hands Collaborative opens their exhibit on Friday, January 8, 2016.
The three artists who make up the “6 Hands” are Janet Gold, Deborah Gregg and Andrea Huffman. These amazing artists will host an Affirmative Banner Workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers on Saturday, January 23 from 11 AM to 1 PM, courtesy of the Broward County Creative Investment Program Grant. The workshop is being presented in partnership with Gilda’s Club of Fort Lauderdale and is open and free to the public. (Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.)
The new year of 2016 includes our fourth annual juried art show! Art intake will be held from 10:30 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, February 6. There are cash prizes for the top three winners along with an exhibition of the winners’ work in Art Gallery 21 from March 18 to April 8. We will host an art social to celebrate the Island City Juried Art Exhibition on Friday, February 12 beginning at 7 PM and the winners will be announced and presented with ribbons! Complete rules and entry form are available here in a downloadable PDF.
Art Gallery 21 is very pleased to present a Color Theory Workshop with Janet Onofrey, Broward College Professor and the 2015 winner of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Award for Visual & Media Artists. The 2-day workshop will take place on Saturday & Sunday, February 20-21, 2016 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the gallery. A complete description, art supply list and registration information can be found here.
All of us at Art Gallery 21 extend wishes for much peace and joy during the holidays and we look forward to seeing you again or meeting you for the first time in the Happy New Year of 2016!
