An island city

Surrounded by the Middle River.

Wilton Manors is considered an island city because it's surrounded by the South Fork of the Middle River. Urban planners describe their ideal of a "livable community" as one where people can live, shop, and work without depending so heavily on a car — higher-density housing with ground-floor retail, more green space, and safer streets for pedestrians.

Like most South Florida municipalities, Wilton Manors has spent the past decade shifting from a quiet Fort Lauderdale suburb into a destination for visitors from around the world. That transition hasn't been simple.

The building

A historic building,
repurposed.

Until the year 2000, redevelopment in South Florida tended to mean tearing buildings down and starting over. That began to shift as Florida communities placed more value on the history and sense of place that drew people here. Art Gallery 21 occupies one of those buildings — the Woman's Club of Wilton Manors, built in 1956 on land donated by local activist Alvar Hagen.

For the full story of the building and how it became a gallery, see the About page.
